Sterile work station

Setting up a sterile workstation

A sterile workstation helps students develop proper operating-room habits even during simulation-based training. The goal is to create a clean, organized, and contamination-free space for suturing practice.

The first step is to prepare a clean surface and lay out all required materials before starting. Instruments such as needle holders, forceps, scissors, sutures, gauze, and blades should be arranged in an orderly manner so that they can be reached easily without unnecessary movement. The workstation should be kept separate from personal items, food, and non-sterile materials.

Students should perform hand hygiene before handling instruments and should wear gloves when appropriate for the activity. If a sterile setup is being simulated, the learner should be taught how to handle sterile packs correctly, avoid touching sterile surfaces unnecessarily, and maintain the integrity of the field. Opening packs, handling instruments, and arranging materials should all be done in a controlled sequence.

The workstation should also include a sharps safety plan. Blades and needles should be placed and discarded carefully, with a designated sharps container nearby. Instruments should never be passed casually from hand to hand if avoidable. A tidy field reduces confusion, prevents contamination, and supports efficient practice.

A good sterile workstation in a suturing workshop should teach students the habits they will later use in clinical environments: clean setup, minimal unnecessary movement, correct handling of sterile items, and safe disposal of sharp instruments.
